Essential question Part 2 Fiction book.

Essential Question: Discuss the feeling that Alexa is having and connect the story to other fiction story.

Since the conversation of Alexa and Warvold. Alexa has been wondering if the stories told about the outside is true. The story of Alexa corresponds to the story of Rapunzel. Rapunzels "step mom" told her thats the outside is full of evil and nothing but darkness. This relate to Warvold as the "step mom" telling everybody that reason why build the wall is to protect everyone from evil. When Rapunzel finally left the tower, her emotions scrambled in fear and excitement. This connects to Alexa, reaching outside the wall was once in a lifetime opportunity. The two difference between the two characters were their emotions and ability to leave. The first difference is that Alexa only wanted to know what the whole truth about the outside, so her emotions and action is very initiative. She never think about the punishment and the consequences that she would receive if she get caught. Meanwhile, Rapunzel was very worried and happy when she left the tower.

                                                     Topic: Animal Abuse

Essential Question: Does the use of Animals for entertainment constitute animal cruelty.

Claim: These activities cause animals to suffer.

 

 

Reason: Circus animals are being forced to perform under sick condition. In the article The cruelest show on earth from SIRS, an Asian elephant bled during an important circus show in Jacksonville. His owner clearly knew that the elephant was sick and unabled to perform, however the owner  forced the poor elephant to perform anyways. Afterwards, an audience member who was a Veterinarian jumped in the stage and helped the elephant, instead of resting the elephant the owner chained him on a pole and forced it to stay there. Almost 99% of all circus animals lived there lives in caged and chains. This proves that circus acts are inhuman and should be stop.

Discuss the importance of the spyglass that Alexa used in order to see what lies outside the wall, and predict what will happen to Alexa.

In the fiction book Dark Hills Divide: Land of Elyon, by Patrick Carman, A spyglass is the only tool that Alexa could use in order to know what lies beyond a thick wall that has been in her way throughout her life. The spyglass was originally from her mother, that Alexa "borrowed" for her trip to Bridgewell. The story started with Alexa talking to Warvold in Bridgewell, while their talking, Warvold mentioned the reason why he build the wall, the reason was to keep evil out and keep his people out of harm. However, during the talk Warvold died, and the secret of Warvold died with him. In Bridgewell, houses are one story high, the reason why, was that it is forbidden to look or sneak outside the walls.There are many hoax and speculations about what really lies outside the wall but only Warvold and Pervis knows. Pervis is the gatekeeper of Bridgewell. When Alexa and her father is in Bridgewell, Alexa's curiosity led her to break the rules and used the spyglass to see some mysterious events that is very different from the story that Warvold has been telling people. However, when Alexa first used the spyglass, she got caught by Pervis and Pervis wasn't happy about it. "Has anyone contacted you from outside the wall?... Whos' outside?... Dont lie to me, Alexa!" (pg.44).  Alexa was frightened and confused on why Pervis act the way he did. After the incidence Pervis Broke the spyglass to ensure the "safety" of all land of Elyon. However, now that Pelvis knows that Alexa is very desperate to know what is outside the walls, therefore the safety of Alexa is endangered. In chapter 6, Pervis, mentioned that he doesn't take orders from anyone, since the death of Warvold. The spyglass will unraveled the mystery and most likely caused the total conflict of the story.

                                           The Vicious Circle of Income Inequality 

               
                In a New York Times article: The Vicious Circle of Income Inequality, the author Robert H. Frank, establish an argument that wealthy people could easily control the economy, that leads to inequality. Therefore, it increase the growing income gap in the globe. In America, Inequality has been the main issue, it leads to political debates and public opinion. In addition, the talents of many poor people have been thrown to waste, due to lack of income. On the other hand, the wealthy. The author claimed that money is the dictator of life. Wealthy people get richer every day by having a business to enrich their wealth. Therefore, wealthy people influence the political process by helping to advance technology that could help public facilities. The inequality of income distribution also affects the future of the next generation. with the tighter budget that middle and lower class receive, the future life of the young, smart and talented children of the lower classes will be repeated, and will never become a higher class citizen "rags to rags in three generations".

Chapter summary: Influence/Speechless.

           In Chapter five ,"Influence/Speechless," of the expository book Eating Animals, Jonathan Foer is concerned about viruses spreading slowly through domestic and  factory farming called H5N1. The virus first  acknowledge in Hong Kong, that killed 6 people. The victims  include a three years old Lam Hoi Ka.

 Some researchers believed that the virus originated from chickens that jumped to humans. In the chapter, Foer introduces many examples that correspond to H5N1 like the "Spanish Flu" of 1918, that killed 100 millions worldwide. The H5N1 isn't much of a threat for now, however researchers found that this new virus could mutate to other animals that could potentially spread all over the world. Foer also mentioned how containers that animlas are being put into after being slaughtered which is were the most of the germs spread. The central idea for the chapter is that new viruses, which moved between farmed animals amd humans will be a major global health threat for the future, starting today.

Chapter summary of "Words Meaning"

               In Chapter two, "Words Meaning," of  his expository of Eating Animals, Jonathan Foer 

addresses the preservation and restoration of animal population and the actual process of how animals are raised to become food. Foer argues that by eating animals people are forgetting about the fact that animals are part of the community and  food production used too much of propaganda to mislead consumers.
The author lists many analytical professions like Anthropodenial to raise  the question, what is an Animal, and what it takes for animals to be define as animal. He points out that once humans were considered animals. Foer wants to make the readers be in the position of the animals, be in a tight place where an animal can't move and die slowly. Chickens are the main animals that Foer made the most facts. He stated that all this years, there are only two types of chickens in the world of factory farming. Broiler and layers. Broilers are the chickens used only for meat, but layers are chickens used only for laying eggs. In Foer's argument, it is better to be the layers than the broilers because once in the chickens live experience a little space for them to lay eggs. Also, Foer introduce the "bycatch" of sea creatures.

He believes that people, catch different types of fish by accident but for purposes. Foer, also point out that if the sea creatures are caught by "accident" then why are they in a sushi restaurant, ready to be eaten?. In conclusion, Foer doesn't want factory farming or eating animals to end, but to make factory owners and the government to realized that every human beings deserved a good death, not a painful in-human ways.

"Lord of the Flies"

                 The Pig's Head also known as the "Lord of the Flies" was created as a gift for the beastie by Jack and his hunters. However this idea was just a hoax  that represent Fear from within and loss of Inocense. In the story "Lord of the Flies" by Malcolm Gladwell, The evolution of attitude and emotions towards the characteristic of every boys on the island changed dramatically. Throughout the story, Fear had been a factor for most of the boys especially the "littluns". With this in mind they believed that their is a beast on the island. This miss-understanding leads through scavagery and loss of innocence for most of them. One of the choir boys named Simon was introduced by the author to be the contrast for the "Lord of the Flies". He is a wise vivid boy who has an open minded attitude towards everything and most importantly he's the only one who can "talk and understand" the the pig's head. He believed that there are no monsters on the Island but its within every human beings. "Fancy Thinking that the beast was something you could hunt, and kill... You knew, didn't you? I'm part of you? Close, Close, Close! Im the reason why its no go? Why things are what they are?" (143)

The conversation of Simon and "The Lord of the Flies" created clearance of why the boys changed to being an intellectual English guys to being merciless hunters. This also represent that there are no such thing as a "beast" but a beast can be formed through a persons behaviour and attitudes towards others. "I know there isn't no beast- not with claused and all of that, i mean... but i know there isnt no fear either ... unless we get frightened on people (104). At first, the beast was nothing but the imaginary of the "littleluns". they give their fear a name and a shape in their mind.
 In conclusion, Gladwell introduced a dark society. The "Lord of the Flies" tries to lead the kids to hell. The prolong stay on the island create a devastating environment prone to disaster.
